Practical English Usageより121~125: can and could

common or typical
Scotland can be very warm in September.
Ann really can get on your nerves sometimes(get on someone's nerves= annoy someone)

could is not always possible
How many eggs were you able to get?(Not How many eggs could you get?)

other uses of could〜softer, less definite form of can
When you're in Spain, you could go and see Alex.

future: can or will be able to
She can win the race tomorrow if she really tries.
I'll be able to speak French at the end of this course.(ちょっとそれるが言語が話せる能力や楽器が弾ける能力を言及するときはcanを省くことが多い。)
can/could always
What are we going to eat?- We could always warm up that soup.

can and could: with see, hear, etc
  I can see Susan coming
Can you hear somebody coming up the stairs?
