"Shaming ourselves is a way of acknowledging that failure before someone else does. It’s the reason some people make self-deprecating jokes or call themselves ugly."

"The thought process goes: If I say all the mean things about myself that everyone else is thinking, then I have the power."

It's kind of awareness for me that we have similar way of thinking even we anker our thought with different language. I would hate those who shame themselves before someone else does and hurt them but now I can understand their feelings as I'm getting older. Encourging words such as "You don't have to compare yourself to others" "Being the way you are is enough", but it's easier said than done. Actually most people care how others see you. It seems inevitable to me.
